New domain extensions have been popping up on the internet like mushrooms after rain in recent years. These domains are usually managed by commercial companies, which means that these companies can freely set prices for domain registration and renewal.
The prices of domains, mainly those with so-called new extensions, are known and can be checked with registrars, including us, at: https://www.smarthost.au/domain-price-list
What are premium domains?
An interesting fact, however, is that some domains are sold by registrars at prices that differ significantly from their official registration price. These are known as premium domains.
Premium domains are basically ordinary domains, but with “interesting” names. These “interesting” names are determined by the registrars themselves, so a domain containing a certain word may be a premium domain for one extension, while the same word may be an ordinary domain for other extensions. However, it often happens that certain phrases are treated as “premium” in most extensions and are therefore more expensive.
An example name is the word “see.”
Let’s check how much a .digital domain costs. The standard price for a domain is $52.99 AUD net per year. But when we check the domain see.digital, we get a premium price:

For comparison, if the domain were to be called see123.digital, the price would be standard:

The situation is similar with the word “see” for other extensions:

while the standard price for a .blog domain is $ 44,99 AUD net

while the standard price for a .best domain is $ 142,99 AUD net

while the standard price for a .live domain is $ 37,99 AUD net

while the standard price for a .site domain is $ 52,99 AUD net
An interesting premium domain
We also found an interesting domain for ourselves: smart.host – isn’t it nice? .host domains cost $ 132,99 AUD net. But smart.host costs only… a little over $ 9999,36 AUD net per year 🙂
Premium domains at Altumhost.eu
At www.smarthost.au, we currently have 400 domain extensions of the so-called new types. How many of them are premium domains? Unfortunately, we do not know.
There is no official list of premium domains – in fact, only when asked whether a given domain is “available” does our system query the relevant registry and verify both availability and price.
And we offer this functionality – we are one of the few registrars in Europe that can provide the price of virtually any premium domain. Feel free to check us out 🙂
